<I have a question for those who believe that hair follicles are geneticaly pre-programed to respond differently to rising levels of DHT. This is simply WHY? Whats the purpose of this in terms of evolution? Where's the advantage? Whats the point of MPB or beard growth? Whats the point of hairy armpits or pubic hair? In women, pubic hair can encourage infections, so whats the point?>
We continually see MPB as a negative trait in a population but we do not examine WHEN our genotype was set and the conditions that existed. IMO and I have stated this many times, MPB was not a negative trait in early man, it in fact imparted some genetic advantage on its carriers. one thought-Early man did not have shears, shaving utensils or the like and so looked for all intents and purposes like a very hairy ape. A receding hairline would open the face up and reveal facial symmetry or lack there of to a prospective mate. Symmetry is the most prized physical trait for a prospective mate, It may have also been a sign of higher intelligence, in fact baldness today is associated with higher intelligence, not truly but in popular culture. Remember early man looked like a Ted Kacynski, unkempt and disheveled.
Thought 2- MPB may be a byproduct of another genetic advantage, say height or strength, meaning a population of people who were genetically advantaged with height or strength may have had MPB develop as an unfortunate byproduct of the gain in height or strength. The tallest and strongest races on earth, West African blacks and northern Europeans have the highest incidence of MPB. Conversely the weakest and smallest races, North American natives (Indians to you heathens) have very little body hair and very little MPB. All physical activities that depend on explosive muscular efforts and high strength combined with large size are dominated by Europeans and blacks. In fact Thomas Jefferson in his writings described in his thoughts how poorly developed the Native Americans were and how physically developed West African Blacks were. Please don't flame me with cries of racism, this is only conjecture and I am using this obvious example as a way of illuminating some ideas. Somehow the outward expression of DHT was a good thing or testosterone/DHT conversion was good.
thought 3- this is for the guys who loathe baldness and cannot believe it was ever a plus genetically. Maybe baldness made the carrier so scary and ugly and frightening that that all others in the population feared the bald warrior and exalted him by living in fear of him. If he wanted your land or female he took it because his visage was so intimidating. Or maybe since the age of marriage (in primitive crude times) an outward expression of high DHT i.e. size strength at a young age 14, 15, 16 made a male much more attractive to a female, and reproduction took place well before the MPB gene expressed itself in the males early twenties or late teens. Ask anyone on this board, attracting females was not a problem in their teens for the most part but delaying marriage through the changing custom of today runs the risk of becoming bald at the time when a man is finally willing to settle down. Thats the risk a balding man takes in trying to play the field while his hair is dissappearing. Marry young and pretty or older and uglier both for the man and the lady if your suitor has MPB>
Remember baldness developed long before females had any say with whom they mated. Young females were given most likely, not to the most handsome man, but the strongest most powerful, the man who could most help the females family gather food or have shelter. Using todays examples, if Karl Malone or Goldberg or the Rock came courting (or demanding) your daughter and his competition was Tom Cruise or Rob Lowe, guess who wins? S Foote your thoughts?
