This is how i see the role of tissue fluid pressure in the determination of anagen follicle size JB.

I dont think there is any change in the `timing' of the phases of the hair cycle overall, but the hydraulic characteristics `adjust' the length of the anagen enlargement phase through the earlier/later onset of normal contact inhibition.

As the follicle enters anagen, it grows deeper and larger within the dermis. This process is in fact the growth of a `hollow' space within the dermal tissue. In order to grow, the anagen follicle must push dermal tissue cells out of the way. The natural resistence to movement of these dermal cells will determine the point at which normal contact inhibition switches off the enlargement of the anagen follicle.

The higher the fluid pressure in the dermis, the harder it is to form a hollow space within it. There is more pressure trying to push dermal cells into the developing `hollow' space. There is a battle for this space between dermal cells and the multiplying cells of the anagen follicle. Ultimately, the higher the pressure the earlier anagen enlargement is `switched off' by contact inhibition.

I think the internal programing of the follicle cells is still `trying' to produce a large anagen follicle, but contact inhibition is overuling this as it overules the growth processes of any organ, according to available space.

In my opinion, the design of hair follicles and the hair cycle evolved to allow adjustment of the anagen period through the influence of the fluid pressure in the dermis. The advantages of such a hair growth adjustment system in `hairy' mammals, are described in the hydraulic dermal model section of my paper.
